Bengaluru: A massive earthquake struck Myanmar on March 28, registering a magnitude of 7.7 on the Richter scale, causing over 2,000 deaths. Tremors were also felt in Thailand and China. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has released satellite images capturing the destruction caused by the earthquake. These images were taken by ISRO's Cartosat-3 satellite, showing the devastation in cities like Mandalay and Sagaing.
Cartosat-3 captured these images from an altitude of 500 kilometers. The images clearly show the collapse of a major bridge over the Irrawaddy River. Additionally, ISRO’s photos reveal the destruction of Mandalay University and the famous Ananda Pagoda. Cartosat-3, an advanced third-generation Earth-imaging satellite, was launched by ISRO in 2019. ISRO rarely releases images taken by this high-tech satellite.
Satellite images indicate severe damage to multiple structures in Mandalay city, including landmarks like Sky Villa, Phayani Pagoda, Mahamuni Pagoda, Ananda Pagoda, and Mandalay University. ISRO’s report also confirms the destruction of Buddhist temples and other buildings in Sagaing city, including the Ma Shi Khana Pagoda.
