At least 622 people have died and 400 have been injured after a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan late Sunday, the Taliban-run Interior Ministry reported.
The tremor, which occurred at 11:47 pm local time at a depth of 160 km, was felt across Pakistan and northern India. Multiple aftershocks, reaching up to magnitude 5.0, followed, adding to the alarm.
Three villages in Kunar province were destroyed, and many others were heavily damaged. Mud and stone homes collapsed, leaving hundreds injured and dozens dead. No foreign aid has yet arrived.
Afghanistan lies on a major seismic fault, making it highly earthquake-prone, with past quakes in October 2023 killing hundreds.
