Raja Krishnamoorthi Leads Illinois Senate Democratic Primary by Wide Margin

Chicago, Illinois, USA: A recent public opinion survey indicates that Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi has established a decisive lead in the Democratic race for Illinois’ vacant U.S. Senate seat as the 2026 primary draws closer.

The poll, conducted by Change Research between December 4 and 8 among likely Democratic voters and shared internally by Krishnamoorthi’s campaign, shows him capturing 42 per cent of voter support. He is well ahead of Illinois Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton, who stands at 14 per cent, and U.S. Representative Robin Kelly, who received 7 per cent.

Support for other contenders remains limited at 4 percent, while nearly three in ten voters—29 percent—have yet to make a decision. According to the campaign’s polling analysis, Krishnamoorthi maintains a substantial margin over his nearest rival as early voting for the 2026 Democratic primary approaches.

The Illinois Senate seat is open following longtime Senator Dick Durbin’s announcement that he will not pursue another term after nearly 30 years in office. His decision prompted a crowded Democratic field, though Krishnamoorthi, Stratton, and Kelly have emerged as the leading figures in the contest.

Representing Illinois’ 8th Congressional District since 2017, Krishnamoorthi officially entered the Senate race in May 2025. Since then, he has raised tens of millions of dollars and launched statewide television and digital advertising campaigns far earlier than his opponents, giving him a clear organisational and financial edge.

His campaign agenda centres on economic concerns affecting everyday families, including the rising cost of living, affordable housing, education, access to healthcare, and lowering prescription drug prices. These issues have been central to his messaging as Democrats shape their policy priorities across the state.

The Democratic primary election is set for March 17, 2026, with the general election scheduled for November 3, 2026. The contest is expected to be among the most closely followed U.S. Senate races nationwide during the election cycle.
