London, UK: A Sikh woman in her twenties was reportedly sexually assaulted in Oldbury, West Midlands, UK, by two White men in what authorities say may have been a racially motivated attack. The incident occurred on September 9 at approximately 8:30 a.m. on Tame Road. West Midlands Police arrested one person linked to the incident on September 14, five days after it occurred.
According to police reports, one of the suspects is described as having a shaved head, a heavy build, and wearing a dark-colored sweatshirt and gloves. The second suspect was seen in a grey top with a silver zipper.
The victim stated that one of the attackers directed racist remarks at her, including telling her to "go back to her country."
Chief Superintendent Kim Madill of Sandwell Police stated: “We are working diligently to identify those responsible. CCTV, forensic, and other investigative measures are well underway.”
She added, “We fully recognize the fear and anger this incident has caused. I am speaking with community members today to reassure them that we are doing everything possible to bring the perpetrators to justice.”
Dabinderjit Singh of the Sikh Federation (UK) expressed concern over the assault, saying, “We await condemnation from politicians across the spectrum for this brutal, racially motivated attack, where a young Sikh woman was severely beaten and sexually assaulted.”
He further commented, “This attack happened in broad daylight on a busy street. All political leaders should take a strong stance against violent racial attacks.”
UK Member of Parliament Gurinder Singh Josan urged community cooperation with the authorities, stating, “I understand the depth of concern within the community regarding this incident. It is crucial that the Police are allowed to conduct a full investigation.”
Josan also emphasized, “Police must work carefully with the victim, respecting her pace. She has been deeply traumatized, and her well-being must be the priority for everyone involved.”
MP Jas Athwal echoed similar sentiments, describing the incident as “a vile, racist, and misogynistic attack.” He said, “This case highlights the tragic consequences of unchecked racist rhetoric. The young woman, a British citizen, has endured a sexual assault driven by misogyny and the assertion of power.”
Athwal added, “I have heard from many residents in Ilford South who are deeply concerned about the safety of women and girls. I share their worries.”
The Students’ Federation of India – United Kingdom condemned the incident as an act of “explicit hatred and violence against minorities,” expressing shock and calling for swift justice against those responsible.
The organization further stated, “This incident reflects the growing racial hostility and anti-immigrant sentiment in the UK. Political leaders must be held accountable for their role in enabling such hate crimes.”
Chief Superintendent Madill thanked the local community for its ongoing support and urged the public to avoid speculation, noting, “Our investigation continues, and we are focused on tracing everyone involved.”
Anyone with information about the case is urged to contact West Midlands Police at 101 or call Crimestoppers at 0800 555111, quoting log 798 of September 9.
