A South Korean Navy maritime patrol aircraft carrying four people crashed near a military base in the southern city of Pohang at 1:43 p.m. local time on Thursday, according to a navy statement. Authorities are investigating the cause and confirming casualties.
Yonhap News Agency reported that the crash occurred in a mountainous area on the east coast, with smoke spotted at the scene by a civilian witness. The aircraft belonged to the navy, as confirmed by the Newsis agency.
This incident follows a deadly Jeju Air crash in December at Muan International Airport, where only two of 181 passengers survived—one of the worst aviation disasters in South Korea's history.
