Tariffs, Trust and Geopolitics: Can US–India Ties Withstand Strain?

Washington, D.C., USA: A policy roundtable in Washington, D.C., hosted by the Foundation for India and Indian Diaspora Studies (FIIDS), focused on strains in U.S.–India relations caused by Donald Trump’s tariffs and tensions over India’s oil trade with Russia.

Experts, diplomats, and strategists noted that despite trade disputes, bipartisan support in Washington ensures the partnership remains strong. FIIDS convener Khanderao Kand highlighted tariffs and sanctions as key challenges but stressed India’s strategic role as a major economy, defense importer, and counterweight to China.

Speakers such as Michael Rubin warned against U.S. silence during tensions, while Kapil Sharma pointed to the relationship’s resilience through past crises. Economists like Anit Mukherjee flagged risks to labor markets and investment from tariffs.

Other voices, including Bill Drexel and Jason Isaacson, emphasized that disagreements may signal deeper interdependence, though Trump’s rhetoric and unpredictable trade policies remain concerns. Former diplomat Pradeep Kapur called for patience and empathy to restore balance.
