Trudeau Emotional Farewell: Defends Tariff Policies Amid Trump Criticism

Ottawa: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau became highly emotional during his final speech as Prime Minister. He spoke about the policies he introduced and the "tariff tensions" with the United States. During the speech, he broke into tears, stating that for nine years, even during difficult times, he always prioritized the country's interests.

Due to rising public opposition, Trudeau resigned from his position as Prime Minister of Canada in January. However, he announced that he would continue in office until a new party leader was elected. Meanwhile, Donald Trump took office as the U.S. President and imposed tariffs on Canada and several other countries, triggering a trade war. In response, Canada also imposed tariffs on American goods, leading to a phone discussion between the two leaders that lasted nearly an hour. Afterward, Trump accused Trudeau of fueling the trade war for his political gain and suggested that he was using the tariff crisis to extend his tenure as Prime Minister.

Trump went even further, mocking Trudeau by suggesting that he was eager to become the governor of the "51st state" of America—a continuation of Trump's previous remarks about merging Canada into the U.S. However, in his final speech, Trudeau dismissed Trump's accusations, stating that the retaliatory tariffs were imposed solely to protect Canada’s economic interests. He emphasized that such allegations would not weaken his resolve and that he would continue to work tirelessly for Canadians. Meanwhile, the Liberal Party is expected to elect a new leader on March 9.
