U.S. President Donald Trump has imposed retaliatory tariffs on several countries, including India, regardless of whether they are allies or rivals. He announced a minimum 10% tariff on all imported goods, with Cambodia facing the highest tariff at 49% and India at 26%. Trump stated that this decision takes effect immediately. In response, India clarified that these tariffs are not a setback for the country.
India’s Ministry of Commerce has begun analyzing the impact of these tariffs on the country. Officials mentioned that there is still a way to negotiate, as Trump's administration allows for tariff reductions if a country can address U.S. concerns. A senior official from the Commerce Ministry emphasized that the tariffs are not a major blow to India.
During a press conference at the White House Rose Garden, Trump described this tariff move as "Liberation Day" for America. He invited cabinet members, along with steel and automobile workers, to the event, stating that these tariffs would help America grow and secure its future. He justified the tariffs by claiming that the U.S. was imposing only half the tariffs that other countries were charging. India now faces a 26% tariff, while China and the EU are subject to 34% and 20%, respectively. Trump asserted that these tariffs would bring back jobs and industries to the U.S.
