Donald Trump continues to shock the world with his announcements. The ongoing controversy surrounding Harvard University has once again become a hot topic because Trump has banned visas for foreign students at Harvard. On Wednesday, the White House announced that President Trump signed a directive to limit visas for foreign students at Harvard University amid escalating disputes with the institution.
Additional Visa Screening and Fees for Applicants
Last month, the U.S. State Department ordered additional screening for all visa applicants seeking to visit Harvard University through consulates abroad, Reuters reported. Meanwhile, the Trump administration is considering imposing a ₹1,000 fee for expedited interviews for tourists and other non-immigrant visa applicants. However, government lawyers have expressed legal concerns over this plan, according to a memo from the U.S. Department of State. Currently, travelers entering the U.S. on tourist and other non-immigrant visas pay a processing fee of ₹185.
Proposed Pilot Program and Possible Challenges
According to the memo, the administration may launch this plan as a pilot program in December. The proposed visa fee aligns with President Trump’s “Gold Card” vision, which grants U.S. citizenship to five million people. However, the State Department’s legal team warns that this plan might be rejected by the White House Budget Office or struck down in U.S. courts.
