Trump Slaps 50% Tariff On Brazil Over Trade And Bolsonaro Trial

Donald Trump has announced a 50% tariff on Brazilian imports, citing unfair trade practices and the prosecution of former President Jair Bolsonaro.

This marks a sharp increase from the previous 10% rate set in April.

Trump also launched a federal investigation into Brazil’s trade policies, accusing the country of targeting U.S. digital businesses. In a message to Brazilian President Lula da Silva, he criticized the lack of reciprocity in trade and political treatment.

The move makes Brazil the 22nd country targeted under Trump’s expanded tariff campaign. Recent tariff hikes include 30% duties on imports from Sri Lanka, Algeria, Iraq, and Libya; 25% on Brunei and Moldova; and 20% on goods from the Philippines, as part of Trump’s broader trade enforcement agenda.
