Two Indian Nationals Arrested for Illegal US Border Crossing in Maine

Maine, USA: Two Indian nationals were taken into custody by U.S. authorities on August 1 after unlawfully entering the country near Maine’s northeastern border, officials confirmed. The arrests were made by agents from the Houlton Sector of the U.S. Border Patrol, according to a statement from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). This incident stands out, as only 15 Indian nationals have been apprehended in this sector over the past three fiscal years, CBP noted.

Both individuals will face legal proceedings and have been placed in removal protocols. “Although illegal border crossings are currently at historically low levels, some still attempt to breach U.S. immigration laws,” said Acting Chief Patrol Agent Craig Shepley. “Those who cross illegally will be arrested, prosecuted, and deported,” he added.

CBP has also launched a voluntary return program aimed at individuals unlawfully residing in the U.S. Through the CBP One app, eligible participants can notify authorities of their intent to leave the country voluntarily. The initiative offers benefits such as travel support, documentation assistance, and a reduced risk of detention during departure preparations. Additionally, those who confirm their departure through the app may receive a $1,000 travel stipend.
