Typhoon Ragasa, the year’s most powerful cyclone, hit northern Philippines with winds over 267 km/h, equal to a Category 5 hurricane.
Known locally as Nando, it caused power outages, flooding, and forced over 10,000 people to evacuate.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. suspended government operations in Metro Manila and 29 Luzon provinces. Hospitals in Cagayan were placed on alert, while hundreds of flights were cancelled.
The storm is moving toward Hong Kong, Macau, and China’s Guangdong province. Hong Kong Airport plans to cancel flights for 36 hours as China declares a Level 2 emergency.
Heavy rains are expected in Guangdong, Fujian, Hunan, Yunnan, Hainan, and nearby regions from September 23–26. The typhoon is set to enter the South China Sea on Tuesday and reach China’s coast by Wednesday.
