In a notable recognition of achievement and service, several individuals of Indian heritage have been named in the New Year Honors List for 2026, released by King Charles III. The list acknowledges their meaningful contributions across diverse professional and community-focused fields.
Those of Indian origin selected for the honors represent a broad spectrum of sectors, including arts and entertainment, scientific research, finance, health care, social welfare, and efforts toward social inclusion.
Dame Commanders of the British Empire (DBE)
Meera Syal received the honor for her contributions to literature, drama, and charitable work. A well-known comedian, author, and performer, she gained national recognition as a co-creator and cast member of the BBC comedy series Goodness Gracious Me, which examined British Asian life and identity. She later appeared in The Kumars at No. 42 and has authored multiple novels and screen projects.
Meena Upadhyaya was honored for her work in strengthening community unity in Wales and for her achievements in medical genetics. Originally from Uttar Pradesh, she relocated to the UK during her teenage years and went on to become a professor emerita in medical genetics. Her academic research has centered on genetic mutations related to inherited conditions, alongside decades of involvement in education, inclusion, and community development initiatives in Wales.

Neeta Avnash Kaur Atkar was recognized for her service to small business financing. Paavan Popat, chief executive officer of TLC Care, received the honor for his work in intergenerational housing.
