Sergio Gor, US President Trump’s nominee for ambassador to India, told lawmakers that Trump shares an “incredible relationship” with PM Narendra Modi and often praises him even while critiquing India on trade.
Gor said Modi enjoys a “unique” friendship with Trump, unlike other world leaders.
Gor noted that the US and India are close to a tariff deal but acknowledged challenges, like India’s Russian oil purchases.
Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said trade talks, ongoing since March, are progressing positively, with both countries satisfied.
Trump recently expressed optimism about concluding the negotiations and praised Modi on Truth Social. PM Modi responded positively, highlighting the partnership’s potential.
On India-China relations, Gor stated that strengthening ties with New Delhi and distancing India from Beijing is a US priority, emphasizing that Indo-US relations are “far warmer” than India-China ties.
