US Education Department to Cut Workforce by 50% Amid Restructuring

New York: The US Education Department is undergoing a major restructuring, with plans to cut half of its workforce. Around 2,100 employees are expected to go on mass leave starting March 21. Former President Donald Trump had earlier ordered a reduction in the department’s workforce. However, the move requires approval from both houses of Congress. The department, which receives an annual budget of $238 billion, currently employs over 4,000 staff members.

Established in 1979, the US Education Department oversees public school funding, student loan programs, and initiatives for low-income students. It plays a crucial role in managing federal education programs. Recently, the department announced its plan to cut 50% of its staff as part of its operational strategy. Education Secretary Linda McMahon confirmed that the layoffs would affect all divisions within the department.

At the time of Trump’s inauguration, the department had 4,133 employees, making it the smallest among the 15 Cabinet-level departments in the US. After the workforce reduction, only 2,183 employees will remain. Employees who lose their jobs will receive pay benefits until June 9, according to the official notice.
