At the White House, Donald Trump said trade with India had long been one-sided, with India imposing the world’s highest tariffs on the US.
He defended the 50% tariffs on India, citing Harley-Davidson motorcycles, which faced a 200% duty until the company set up a plant in India.
Trump noted the US does less business with India due to these tariffs, while India benefits more. Earlier, he imposed 25% tariffs, followed by another 25% over India’s Russia ties.
Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said India and the US have held five rounds of talks on a trade deal, with more discussions planned, though dates are pending.
