A U.S. judge has blocked former President Trump’s executive order aiming to restrict birthright citizenship, calling it unconstitutional and causing "irreparable harm."

Issued by Judge Joseph LaPlante in New Hampshire, the injunction halts the order nationwide and permits a class-action lawsuit on behalf of affected children, though not their parents.

LaPlante rejected the government's argument that the 14th Amendment doesn’t apply to children of undocumented immigrants, calling the case “not a close call.”

The ruling could set up a major legal battle and possibly reach the Supreme Court. The government has been given seven days to appeal.
