Boston, Massachusetts, USA: Renowned journalist Indira Lakshmanan has been named the new co-host of ‘Here & Now’, the nationally syndicated midday news program produced by NPR (National Public Radio) and WBUR, Boston University’s public radio station.
Lakshmanan, who brings over three decades of experience in global journalism, will officially begin hosting duties by late November. The show, broadcast live on 500 NPR member stations nationwide, currently reaches nearly 5 million listeners weekly.
Before this appointment, Lakshmanan served as Ideas and Opinions Editor at U.S. News & World Report, where she championed diverse perspectives across editorial content. Over the course of her distinguished career, she has held senior editorial roles and hosted programs for some of the world’s most respected outlets, including The Associated Press, Bloomberg, The Boston Globe, National Geographic, and the Pulitzer Centre.
Her long relationship with NPR includes contributing to and guest-hosting several of its flagship shows, such as ‘1A,’ ‘Weekend Edition,’ ‘On Point,’ and ‘Here & Now.’
Meanwhile, Peter O’Dowd, who has been a recurring host for the show, will now transition into a role as correspondent and backup host. Additionally, Allan Price, a veteran of BBC News with more than 20 years of experience, joins as the new executive producer.
“‘Here & Now’ is in a moment of strong growth, and we’re thrilled to strengthen our team with such accomplished journalists,” said Victor Hernandez, WBUR’s Chief Content Officer. “Indira, Allan, and Peter will help us continue delivering rich, insightful journalism that resonates with audiences across the country.”
The program has seen remarkable progress recently, with a 13% increase in listenership over the past six months, solidifying its reputation as one of NPR’s leading midday news shows.
Reflecting on her journey, Lakshmanan shared her deep connection with public radio:
“I grew up listening to NPR’s ‘All Things Considered’—our home radios were always tuned to public broadcasting. I even began my career at NPR as an editorial assistant on the foreign desk. After reporting and editing from six continents and across major media, I’ve realised my heart belongs to audio storytelling. Co-hosting ‘Here & Now’ truly feels like coming home.”
Celebrated journalist Judy Woodruff praised the appointment, calling it a perfect pairing:
“Indira Lakshmanan and WBUR represent the best in journalism—dedication, integrity, and excellence. Her experience as a foreign correspondent, political reporter, editor, and columnist makes her an invaluable voice for NPR listeners.”
