Vietnam evacuated over 325,500 people from five coastal provinces ahead of Typhoon Kajiki, with winds of 140 km/h and waves up to 9.5 meters.
Residents were moved to schools and public buildings, while streets in Vinh were deserted and businesses closed.
Nearly 30,000 people were evacuated by dawn, aided by 16,000 military personnel.
The typhoon is expected to weaken after landfall. Climate change is increasing the intensity of such storms.
China’s Hainan Island also evacuated 20,000 residents. So far in 2025, Vietnam has suffered over 100 deaths and $21 million in damages from natural disasters.
