Toronto, Ontario, Canada: Vinod Kapri’s film Pyre scored two major honours at the 2025 Mosaic International South Asian Film Festival (MISAFF), earning both Best Feature Film and Best Music awards. The ceremony took place in Toronto, Canada, where Kapri and Academy Award–winning composer Mychael Danna accepted the accolades.
With these latest wins, Pyre has now collected 16 notable international awards, including two for Best Director, cementing its position as one of the year’s most celebrated independent films.
The awards were presented by renowned Indian-Canadian filmmaker Deepa Mehta.
Expressing his gratitude, Kapri said, “Receiving these awards from Deepa Mehta ji is something I will treasure always. Her influence on global cinema is extraordinary, and having her honour our work adds immense value.”
Sharing her thoughts on the film, Mehta said she was “deeply moved,” explaining, “I watched Pyre a couple of nights ago and was quiet for nearly ten minutes afterward — which is very rare for me. The storytelling, visuals, music, and precision in the filmmaking left a profound impact. It taught me how silence can speak, how life can be celebrated, and how deeply a film can move you.”
She later posted on Instagram, calling Pyre “a beautiful, thoughtful, and moving film,” praising its emotional depth, touches of humour, and Danna’s enchanting musical score.
MISAFF, held annually in Toronto, is considered one of North America’s leading platforms for bold and boundary-pushing South Asian cinema. The 11th edition highlighted creators who are redefining cinematic expression and elevating diverse narratives.
