Ottawa, Canada: Canada to Host G7 Summit Next Month Amid Efforts to Ease India-Canada Relations
Canada is set to host the G7 summit next month, marking a significant event on the global diplomatic calendar.
In a recent development, India's Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar spoke with his Canadian counterpart, Anita Anand, in an effort to ease strained ties between the two countries. The telephone conversation on May 25 represents the highest level of diplomatic contact between Ottawa and New Delhi since Mark Carney became Canada’s Prime Minister in March.
Relations between Canada and India have been tense following accusations linking New Delhi to the 2023 assassination of a Canadian Sikh, claims which India has firmly denied.
During the call, Jaishankar discussed the prospects for improving India-Canada relations and extended his best wishes to Anand for a successful tenure. Anand, who has Indian heritage, expressed on X her commitment to strengthening bilateral ties, deepening economic cooperation, and advancing shared priorities.
India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has previously been invited to attend G7 summits, including the 2019 meeting in Biarritz hosted by France. However, there are currently no details on whether Modi has received an invitation to the upcoming summit in Canada.
