Who Is Dr. Basu, the First South Asian to Lead ASPS in 90+ Years?

Houston, Texas, USA: Dr C. Bob Basu has been elected as the President of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), making history as the first South Asian to hold this prestigious position in the organisation’s more than 90-year history.

The ASPS, which comprises 11,000 board-certified plastic surgeons, will have Dr Basu at its helm from October 12, 2025, through October 18, 2026.

A highly respected surgeon and leader, Dr Basu is based in Houston, Texas, and has performed over 18,000 procedures throughout his career. His appointment as president is seen as a milestone for South Asian representation in American healthcare leadership.

Prior to this role, Dr Basu served as ASPS’s Vice President of Finance and Treasurer, helping the society navigate the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic while strengthening its long-term financial stability. Over the past twenty years, he has held multiple leadership roles within ASPS, including positions focused on health policy, advocacy, governance, membership, practice management, and education. Additionally, he has represented plastic surgeons in the American Medical Association, serving as chair of the surgical section.

Reflecting on his appointment, Dr Basu said, “I am deeply honoured to serve as president of ASPS and to represent our 11,000 members worldwide. Our mission remains clear: to maintain the highest standards in training, research, ethics, education, and innovation while promoting public understanding of the critical value of aesthetic and reconstructive plastic surgery performed by board-certified surgeons.”

He added, “As interest in these procedures continues to rise, our dedication to patient safety and excellent outcomes is more important than ever. I am excited to continue strengthening ASPS’s role as a trusted source of reliable and balanced education in the field of plastic surgery.”

Dr Basu is the founder and managing director of Basu Aesthetics + Plastic Surgery, a private practice in Houston specialising in aesthetic surgery of the face, body, and breast.

He completed his undergraduate studies with honours at Princeton University and earned both his MD and MPH degrees from Tufts University School of Medicine. He did his general surgery residency at The George Washington University School of Medicine, followed by a plastic surgery residency at Baylor College of Medicine’s Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery. He also holds a degree in Business Administration, with a focus on Healthcare Administration, from Brandeis University.
