Why Did Los Angeles Impose A Curfew After ICE Protests?

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass imposed an overnight curfew in a one-square-mile downtown area from 8 p.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. Wednesday, after days of protests turned violent following recent ICE raids. The unrest included looting, vandalism, and clashes with police.

Bass called the looting of 23 businesses a "tipping point." The curfew exempts residents, the homeless, media, emergency workers, and public safety personnel.

Police Chief Jim McDonnell said the curfew aims to stop escalating "unlawful and dangerous behavior." Bass also criticized the federal response, questioning the role of deployed Marines and the delay in National Guard support. She emphasized protest rights but stressed that public safety comes first.
