The Trump administration asked the US Supreme Court to uphold 50% tariffs on Indian exports, saying removing them could trigger trade retaliation and hurt efforts for Ukraine peace.
Solicitor General John Sauer called the tariffs “crucial” for national security and global stability. They target India’s Russian energy purchases and trade practices, part of broader measures against multiple countries.
The administration has filed an appeal after the court determined in a 7-4 decision that Trump overstepped his authority granted by the 1977 Emergency Powers Act.
The administration argued that the tariffs strengthen the US economy, defense industries, and global trade ties.
India had been negotiating a trade deal, but talks stalled over its trade with Russia and limited access for US agricultural products.
