Washington, USA: Indian tycoon Gautam Adani’s team has reportedly reached out to former officials from President Donald Trump’s administration in an effort to have bribery charges in the United States dropped, according to sources cited by Bloomberg on May 4.
The discussions, which kicked off earlier this year, have picked up speed in recent weeks and may lead to a settlement within the next few weeks if the momentum continues, the report suggested.
Adani and his business representatives have been engaging with U.S. government officials to challenge criminal allegations linked to an international corruption investigation, Bloomberg noted, quoting individuals with direct knowledge of the developments.
Back in November, American prosecutors filed charges against Gautam Adani and his nephew Sagar Adani, accusing them of offering illicit payments to win energy project contracts in India and deceiving U.S. investors during fundraising efforts.
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) issued subpoenas to both Adanis, claiming they funneled millions in bribes to Indian authorities while failing to disclose this during a $750 million bond sale by Adani Green Energy.
According to Bloomberg, Adani’s legal team has been arguing that pursuing the case runs counter to Donald Trump’s administration’s enforcement focus and is urging officials to reevaluate the charges.
When contacted by Bloomberg, representatives for the Adani Group, as well as spokespersons from the U.S. Department of Justice and the White House, declined to issue a statement.
Reuters also reported that they received no immediate comment from the Adani Group, the U.S. Justice Department, or the White House when inquiries were made.
In a statement released late last month, Adani Green maintained that its internal review of the indictment did not reveal any violations or discrepancies in compliance.
