Julius Malema Urges Rhodes University Name Change to Steve Biko

South Africa, Makhanda: EFF leader Julius Malema has proposed that Rhodes University be renamed in honor of Steve Biko, the anti-apartheid activist and Black Consciousness leader.

During a public lecture at the university on Monday night, Malema criticized the current name, stating that it honors Cecil John Rhodes, whom he described as a brutal colonizer and racist. Malema emphasized that Rhodes, an imperialist, would have opposed the presence of current students, as he despised those who were different and treated them poorly.

Malema expressed his dismay that, despite achieving democracy 30 years ago, South Africa still has institutions named after individuals who inflicted pain and suffering. He pointed out that Grahamstown has been renamed Makhanda and questioned why Rhodes University could not similarly adopt a more fitting name.

He praised Steve Biko for his contributions during the National Union of South African Students (NUSAS) era, noting Biko's significant influence and his connection to the Eastern Cape. Malema argued that Biko, who challenged the influence of white liberals and advocated for self-determination, would be a more appropriate namesake for the university.

Malema's lecture also covered topics such as good governance and security in Africa. He asserted that discussing these issues necessitates acknowledging the harm caused by colonizers and imperialists. He argued that colonial exploitation of Africa’s resources and the imposition of corrupt leadership have hindered the continent’s progress.

Reflecting on historical figures, Malema highlighted the transformative efforts of Muammar Gaddafi in Libya, Thomas Sankara in Burkina Faso, and Patrice Lumumba in the Democratic Republic of Congo before their assassinations. He concluded that ongoing conflicts in Africa are rooted in colonial legacies and criticized foreign powers for trying to influence the continent's leadership
