New York City, New York, USA: Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism has appointed Indian-American veteran journalist Pallavi Gogoi as the Executive Director of the prestigious Knight-Bagehot Fellowship in Economics and Business Journalism. She will officially assume the role on August 17, succeeding Robert Smith, who has led the fellowship since 2021.
The Knight-Bagehot Fellowship is one of Columbia Journalism School's flagship professional development programs, combining advanced journalism coursework with core MBA classes at Columbia Business School. The program also features weekly seminars led by prominent media and business leaders, providing experienced journalists with in-depth training in business, economics, finance, and technology.
In her new position, Gogoi will oversee the fellowship's academic and professional development initiatives, continuing its long-standing mission of strengthening business journalism through advanced education.
Gogoi brings more than 25 years of journalism experience, having worked across six major news organizations. She has served as NPR's Chief Business Editor for nearly a decade and previously held reporting and editorial roles at CNN, The Associated Press, USA Today, BusinessWeek, and Dow Jones/The Wall Street Journal.
Alongside her newsroom career, Gogoi has taught courses on economic storytelling at Columbia Journalism School and Princeton University, reflecting her strong commitment to journalism education.
Expressing her excitement about the appointment, Gogoi said she believes economics influences nearly every aspect of life and emphasized the importance of journalism that helps people better understand economic issues. She added that she looks forward to bringing her years of mission-driven journalism to the fellowship.
Welcoming the appointment, Jelani Cobb, Dean and Henry R. Luce Professor of Journalism at Columbia Journalism School, said Gogoi's extensive experience as both a newsroom leader and educator makes her ideally suited to lead the fellowship. He expressed confidence that she would preserve the program's distinguished legacy while creating new opportunities for future fellows.
Gogoi is a graduate of Delhi University, holding a Master's degree in English Literature from Hindu College and a Bachelor's degree from SGTB Khalsa College. As the Knight-Bagehot Fellowship enters its sixth decade, the program continues its focus on equipping journalists with a deeper understanding of business and economics to support informed public reporting.
