Washington, D.C., USA: Indian-born technology executive and venture capitalist Sivaramakrishnan "Soma" Somasegar was honored in the United States House of Representatives for his significant contributions to technology, entrepreneurship, and community service.
During a tribute on the House floor, Congresswoman Suzan DelBene of Washington praised Somasegar as an exceptional technologist, entrepreneur, leader, and respected member of the community.
Born and raised in southern India, Somasegar moved to the United States to pursue higher education at Louisiana State University. He joined Microsoft in 1989 and played a pivotal role in the development of Windows NT, one of the company's most influential products.
DelBene highlighted Somasegar's dedication, leadership abilities, and strong work ethic, which helped him rise through Microsoft's ranks. He eventually served as Senior Vice President before retiring from the company in 2015.
Reflecting on their professional relationship, DelBene recalled his positive personality and leadership qualities, noting that his warmth and enthusiasm made a lasting impact on colleagues and peers.
Following his departure from Microsoft, Somasegar joined Madrona Venture Group as Managing Director. In this role, he worked closely with entrepreneurs and emerging technology companies, helping strengthen the innovation ecosystem across the Pacific Northwest.
The Congresswoman also acknowledged his involvement in community initiatives and sports. As a co-founder of the Seattle Orcas franchise, Somasegar contributed to expanding the popularity of professional cricket in the region, particularly among the growing South Asian community.
In addition, he was recognized as a strong supporter of women's empowerment and initiatives focused on creating greater opportunities and equity.
A significant part of the tribute focused on his family. DelBene described his wife Akila and their two daughters as the center of his life, emphasizing that his personal and professional accomplishments were deeply rooted in the love and support of his family.
Calling on fellow lawmakers to honor his legacy, DelBene said Somasegar would be remembered for his kindness, wisdom, leadership, and lasting contributions to technology and society.
