England, London, UK: The Rt Rev Dr. John Perumbalath, Bishop of Liverpool, is facing serious accusations from two women, including claims of sexual assault and harassment, which have sparked concerns about the Church of England’s response to the case. The bishop has denied the allegations, asserting that no assault occurred, as reported by the BBC.

Channel 4 News reported that one woman has accused Perumbalath of sexually assaulting her multiple times between 2019 and 2023, while he served as a bishop in Essex. The claims have raised questions about both his leadership and the Church's disciplinary procedures.

Perumbalath responded to the accusations, stating, "The incidents described took place in public settings with others present. I categorically deny the allegations made against me by both women. I have fully cooperated with any investigations from the National Safeguarding Team. The police also looked into the allegations in Essex and decided to take no further action."

The bishop continued, "While I do not believe I have done anything wrong, I understand the importance of how my actions may be perceived by others, and I take these lessons seriously."

Bishop John, originally from Kerala, India, was ordained by the Church of North India in 1994 before moving to the UK in 2001. He held positions within the Diocese of Rochester before rising to prominence in the Church of England.

The controversy surrounding Bishop Perumbalath has been further compounded by accusations against Archbishop Stephen Cottrell, the acting head of the Church. Reports indicate that Cottrell was aware of the allegations before Perumbalath’s appointment as Bishop of Liverpool, raising questions about whether the Church failed to address the matter before proceeding with the appointment. These developments have intensified public scrutiny of the Church's handling of such allegations.
