Is Trump Reviving Guantanamo to Detain Criminal Migrants? Executive Order Sparks Debate

Washington, USA: On January 29, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he would sign an executive order directing the Pentagon and the Department of Homeland Security to begin preparations for a migrant facility at Guantanamo Bay.

During a statement at the White House, Trump explained, "I am also signing an executive order today instructing the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security to start setting up a 30,000-person migrant facility at Guantanamo Bay."

The president outlined that the facility would be used to "detain the most dangerous criminal illegal immigrants posing a threat to the American people." He went on to say that some of these individuals are so dangerous that the U.S. does not trust their home countries to keep them incarcerated, prompting the decision to transfer them to Guantanamo. "This will immediately double our detention capacity and will be a tough approach," he added.

Guantanamo Bay, located on the coast of Cuba, was originally established in 2002 under President George W. Bush to hold foreign suspects linked to terrorism after the September 11 attacks.
