3. Trim Trees and Landscaping: Before hurricane season intensifies, ensure all tree branches and landscaping are trimmed to prevent potential damage to your home during high winds. Weak or dead branches pose the greatest risk and should be promptly removed by a licensed arborist.

4. Secure Fences: High winds can turn loose or damaged fence boards into dangerous projectiles. Inspect and repair any loose or damaged sections to safeguard your property and reduce the risk of storm debris causing additional damage.

5. Inspect Your Roof: Hurricane winds can cause severe roof damage, including missing shingles, holes, and damage to attachments like solar panels. Check for signs of wear or damage and consider professional inspection and repairs if needed.

6. Clean Gutters and Downspouts: Clear debris from gutters and ensure downspouts are unobstructed to allow for proper drainage. This maintenance is crucial during slow-moving storms that can deposit large volumes of rain, like Hurricane Harvey in 2017.

7. Seal Windows and Doors: Hurricane-force winds can drive rain into homes through vulnerable openings. Check and repair window and door seals, weatherstripping, and caulking to minimize water intrusion during storms.

8. Prepare Your Garage: Create space in your garage or shed to store outdoor furniture, decor, and other loose items before a hurricane approaches. This proactive measure not only protects your belongings but also makes storm preparation more efficient.

9. Review Insurance Coverage: Understand your flood risk and ensure your insurance coverage is adequate for hurricane-related damage. Standard homeowners insurance typically doesn't cover flood or wind damage, so consider adding separate policies before a storm is imminent.
