Ohio State Safety Director Prioritizes Community Partnerships

Monica Moll, the public safety director at Ohio State University, was recently featured in The Chronicle of Higher Education discussing the challenges faced by college police forces and their innovative responses. With extensive experience, Moll ensures stability while promoting innovation in campus safety.

Regarding collaborations with local agencies, Moll emphasizes regular meetings between The Ohio State University Police Department and various law enforcement agencies, including the Columbus Division of Police (CPD), to coordinate efforts.

In late 2020, Ohio State established a task force to address safety concerns on campus and in surrounding areas, involving stakeholders such as the Office of Student Life, the Department of Public Safety, students, staff, and public health professionals.

Following the task force's recommendations, Ohio State has observed a decrease in off-campus crime. Initiatives included installing more than 60 license plate readers, adding 20 LED light fixtures off campus, and partnering with the city of Columbus to enhance surveillance in the University District and campus parking garages. The university has also expanded its police and non-sworn security personnel and reinforced joint patrol programs with CPD. Additionally, Ohio State promotes student safety through an online course named Stay Safe Buckeyes, covering crime prevention, reporting procedures, and self-defense.

To strengthen community support and trust, Moll highlighted the expansion of Ohio State's community roundtable, which convenes diverse voices from Columbus, including business owners and residents, for monthly discussions with university stakeholders. These dialogues focus on issues like housing code enforcement, street lighting, and other safety concerns in adjacent areas to the campus.

Dave Isaacs, spokesman for the Office of Student Life, stressed the significance of community engagement in improving safety: "Our goal is to empower residents to take responsibility for safety concerns, fostering an environment where mutual vigilance prevails."

Establishing and nurturing these relationships is crucial for maintaining a secure environment not only within the university but also throughout the broader community.
