MEA Urges Indians in Syria to Leave Amid Rebel Gains and Escalating Conflict

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued a travel advisory urging Indian citizens in Syria to leave immediately due to escalating violence, as rebel forces gain significant ground. Syrian rebels have seized Aleppo, and Hama, and advanced towards Homs, with thousands fleeing the region. Jordan has closed its border with Syria, while Israel has reinforced its military presence. The Islamic State has resurfaced in eastern Syria.

The MEA highlighted the worsening situation, with Islamist-led rebels taking control of key cities, including Daraa, a symbolic location marking the start of the 2011 uprising. The ministry has activated an emergency helpline and email for assistance.

India has approximately 90 nationals in Syria, including 14 working for UN organizations. The MEA is in close contact with them to ensure their safety.
