Paris Hotel Workers Strike During Olympics: IOC Members Affected

France, Paris: On Thursday, workers at a luxury Paris hotel, where International Olympic Committee (IOC) members are staying, went on strike just one day before the Olympics' opening ceremony.

The major French union CGT reported that the IOC had paid Hotel du Collectionneur, the hotel where the strike took place, 22 million euros ($23.88 million) for exclusive access.

The Paris branch of CGT shared a video on social media showing about a dozen workers in a hotel corridor, holding signs that read, "No 13th month, no Olympics!. In France, many companies provide a bonus called the '13th month' in December, but the disparity between luxury accommodations and meager wages, coupled with demands for the restoration of social benefits, highlights ongoing issues."

The union claimed that employees were demanding a wage increase after not receiving a raise for seven years. The strike was initiated after the fifth round of negotiations on Wednesday ended in failure.

In response, Ho  tel du Collectionneur's management stated, "Negotiations with the unions are ongoing, and we are committed to maintaining hotel operations smoothly."

Despite a 9.5 million euros ($10.3 million) dividend paid to shareholders this year, the union argued that the hotel has not addressed its staff's financial concerns.

Additionally, around 200 performers staged a separate protest along the Seine River on Monday, refusing to participate in a rehearsal for Friday's opening ceremony, in protest of working conditions and inequality faced by entertainment workers at the Paris Games.
