Washington: US President Joe Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris on Sunday as the Democratic Party's presidential candidate. He ended his re-election bid after a recent disastrous debate with Donald Trump.

The President called for his party to unite behind Kamala Harris, praising her selfless and patriotic act.

She aims to earn her party's nomination and win the election.

"My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energy on my duties as president for the remainder of my term. My first decision as the party's nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as vice president, which was the best decision I have ever made," the 81-year-old president tweeted.

"I want to give my full support and approval to Kamala as our party's candidate this year. Democrats - it's time to come together and defeat Trump. Let's do this," said the post.

If Biden's endorsement is accepted, Kamala Harris will become the first woman of Indian descent to contest the US presidential election.

Vice President Kamala Harris said that she is proud to be endorsed by Biden and wants to earn and win this nomination.
