USA_INDIA: The United States has expressed disappointment over accusations made by the BJP, alleging that the US State Department and a "deep state" are attempting to destabilize India by targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and industrialist Gautam Adani. A US embassy spokesperson described these claims as "disappointing," emphasizing the importance of a free and independent press in democratic societies.The BJP accused the investigative journalism platform OCCRP (Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project) and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi of collaborating to undermine India’s interests. These allegations stemmed from a French newspaper's report claiming to reveal “hidden links” between OCCRP, the US government, and funding from billionaire philanthropist George Soros. Congress leaders have refuted these claims and raised objections in Parliament.
OCCRP dismissed the allegations, asserting that it operates independently and without donor influence. A spokesperson said, "A free and independent press is vital for democracy, enabling informed debate and holding power to account." The US government, according to the embassy, supports media freedom globally and works with independent organizations to provide training and development for journalists, without interfering in editorial policies.
Referring to the French media report, the BJP alleged that OCCRP receives funding from the US State Department’s USAID, alongside entities like George Soros and the Rockefeller Foundation. OCCRP called the report “simply wrong,” adding, "Our journalism is not restricted by donor influence. The story, co-written by a disgruntled former network member, failed to provide evidence of inaccuracies or interference in our reporting, relying instead on insinuations."
