6.2 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Alaska, Tsunami Alerts Issued

A 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck Alaska’s Peninsula on July 21 at a shallow depth of 48 km, raising the risk of aftershocks, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).

This came after a more powerful 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck on July 17 at a depth of 36 km.

Quakes occurring at shallow depths tend to produce intense surface tremors, often resulting in more severe damage.

The Alaska-Aleutian subduction zone is among the world’s most seismically active, frequently generating powerful quakes, tsunamis, and volcanic activity.

The region also houses over 130 volcanoes and accounts for most U.S. volcanic eruptions in the past 200 years.
