Canadian Border Officer Sidhu Takes India to Court Over Alleged Defamation

Canadian Border Officer Sues Indian Government Over Alleged Defamation Campaign

Ontario, Canada: A senior Canadian border official has filed a multimillion-dollar lawsuit against the Indian government, claiming it orchestrated a disinformation campaign that harmed his career and endangered his safety.

Sandeep Singh Sidhu, known as Sunny, a superintendent with the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), has filed a $9 million lawsuit in the Ontario Superior Court, according to Global News. Sidhu’s legal action comes months after several Indian media outlets reported him as a Khalistani terrorist linked to Canadian government operations—a characterization he denies. Indian authorities have also consistently rejected any claims of conducting disinformation against Canadian citizens.

Sidhu alleges that the Indian government specifically targeted him because of his surname and his visible role in national security. He claims these actions painted him as a fugitive Khalistani terrorist, tarnishing his reputation.

The lawsuit also criticizes the CBSA for failing to provide adequate protection. According to Sidhu, the agency dismissed the death threats against him as a “non-work-related issue” and responded by launching a strict internal investigation. During this period, he was subjected to invasive background checks, forced to waive privacy rights, and suspended without pay, only to be later exonerated and reinstated.

Sidhu is seeking compensation for the psychological trauma, financial losses, and reputational damage caused by these events. A preliminary court hearing for the case is scheduled for early 2026.
