Indian American Couple Raj and Anna Asava Drive HungerMitao’s Fight Against Hunger

Texas, USA: Indian American philanthropists Raj and Aradhana (Anna) Asava are mobilizing the community nationwide to fight food insecurity through their initiative, HungerMitao. Founded in 2017, the movement encourages Indian Americans to support local food banks by volunteering, organizing food drives, and contributing funds where help is needed most.

The initiative gained renewed momentum during a recent US government shutdown, when thousands of families suddenly lost income or access to food assistance benefits, leading to a sharp rise in demand at food banks. In response, HungerMitao partnered with the Feeding America network to amplify ongoing hunger-relief efforts rather than building a new system from scratch.

Over the past eight years, the engagement of a few thousand volunteers has helped generate an estimated impact of 80 million meals nationwide. What began as a single chapter at the North Texas Food Bank has grown into a national movement, involving schools, faith-based institutions, corporations, and community organizations.

HungerMitao has also attracted major corporate and individual support, including multiple million-meal pledges benefiting food banks in North Texas, Houston, and surrounding regions. The initiative places strong emphasis on sustainability, recurring donations, and youth involvement through volunteering and digital giving.

By blending cultural traditions of service with large-scale collaboration, HungerMitao is transforming community participation into measurable action, strengthening local food banks, and making a lasting impact in the fight against hunger across the United States.
