Lahore Faces Historic Flooding: 4 Dead, Flights Delayed, Power Outages

Lahore, Pakistan: On Thursday, Lahore witnessed an unprecedented downpour, breaking a 44-year-old rainfall record within just three hours. This severe weather resulted in the deaths of four people in Lahore and two in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with at least seven others injured. The intense rainfall caused major disruptions, including delays to six flights and significant damage to hospitals, where rainwater infiltrated wards and flooded facilities.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has warned that the heavy rain could continue until August 6, with potential breaks, and forecasted above-average rainfall for Lahore during the first half of August. Residents in several Lahore neighborhoods struggled with clogged sewers and stranded vehicles due to the torrential rain.

Power outages were widespread, affecting 410 feeders of the Lahore Electric Supply Company. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, flash floods caused by the rainfall led to additional fatalities, including a farmer and a young girl. Relief efforts are ongoing in Sorech village, impacted by a glacial lake outburst, displacing 60 families. The Meteorological Department has cautioned that continued heavy rain could lead to Chenab River overflow and possible flooding.
