Peru Earthquake: 5.6 Magnitude Quake Hits Lima, 1 Dead, 5 Injured

A powerful 5.6 earthquake struck near Lima, Peru, killing one and injuring five. Shocking footage shows public panic as authorities rule out a tsunami and monitor aftershocks. Footage captured terrified worshippers fleeing mid-service at the city’s cathedral.

The USGS located the epicentre 23 km off Callao’s coast. A 36-year-old man was killed in northern Lima, while five others sustained injuries. Damage to roads and schools was also reported.

President Dina Boluarte confirmed there’s no tsunami risk and personally visited Callao to oversee emergency measures and reassure residents. A football match and religious services were disrupted, with footage widely shared online.

All Lima districts felt the quake. Seismologists are monitoring aftershocks and have released preliminary ground intensity data. Peru, located on the seismically active Ring of Fire, remains on alert for further tremors.
