Trump 25% Tariff Warning Overshadows India US Trade Talks

US President Donald Trump, during a media interaction, threatened to impose 20–25% tariffs on India, reiterating that India charges high tariffs and crediting himself for halting an India-Pakistan conflict. Trump asserted, "India is a friend... they stopped the war with Pakistan because I asked them to," while also admitting that the trade deal with India is still under negotiation.

However, just hours later, Prime Minister Narendra Modi dismissed any suggestion of foreign involvement in ending Operation Sindoor—India’s response to a terror strike in Jammu and Kashmir. Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Prime Minister Modi disclosed that he had personally told US Vice President J.D. Vance that any hostile move by Pakistan would be met with strong and decisive retaliation from India.

Meanwhile, the sixth round of US-India trade talks is scheduled for August 25. While a deal seems distant, both sides remain open to negotiations, with the US stressing continued constructive dialogue.
