U.S. President Donald Trump warned Russia of a 100% tariff and potential sanctions on countries buying Russian oil unless it ends its war with Ukraine within 50 days.
He made the statement during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, saying the tariffs would be “very severe,” possibly including secondary sanctions.
A White House source stated that Russia may be hit with both tariffs and sanctions if a ceasefire agreement isn’t reached by early September.
This marks a possible shift in Western policy, as previous measures avoided restricting Russia’s oil exports to countries like China and India.
Trump also announced a new U.S. weapons package for Ukraine, including Patriot missile systems, to be funded by NATO allies. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked Trump for the support and confirmed discussions with his envoy, Keith Kellogg.
