US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has unveiled a proposal to cancel visas for Chinese students, particularly those engaged in research or believed to have ties with the Chinese Communist Party. So far, there’s been no response from the Chinese embassy.

Pressure is growing in the US for universities to cut ties with China. Lawmakers have warned that Chinese students may access US-funded research. Indian students lead in numbers in the US, followed closely by over 277,000 Chinese students.

Recently, the US has enforced stricter visa rules, where even minor violations like traffic offenses can lead to visa cancellation. Students missing classes or dropping out without notice also risk losing their visas and future eligibility.

Visa interviews have been paused temporarily to analyze applicants’ social media for national security concerns.
