How It Works

The application window for the green card lottery runs from October to November. While selections are made at random, being chosen doesn’t ensure a green card—further steps like interviews and screenings are required. Applicants must clear an interview, medical tests, and background checks.

Eligibility Criteria

Countries with over 50,000 immigrants to the US in the past 5 years are not eligible. Also, only one application per person is allowed—multiple entries lead to disqualification.

Can Indians Apply?

India has been excluded from the list due to its large immigrant population already residing in the US. However, Indians born in eligible countries can still apply.

Eligible Countries Include:

South Africa, Sudan, Egypt, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and others.
