The Indian government has introduced two new visa categories to enhance its status as a leading destination for global education. The e-student visa and e-student-x visa are specifically tailored to support international students and their families who wish to study in India.

This initiative, managed by the Ministry of Home Affairs, is aimed at simplifying the process for overseas students and their dependents, while also enriching India’s diverse academic landscape.

Streamlined Visa Process for Global Learners

The e-student visa is designed for international students who are enrolled through the government’s Study in India (SII) portal. Meanwhile, the e-student-x visa provides a streamlined process for the dependents of these students. Applicants can easily apply for both visas via the SII portal or the official visa website at indianvisaonline.gov.in.

To ensure a smooth application process, students will be issued a unique SII ID, which not only authenticates their application but also grants access to essential services like tracking admission status and visa processing.

A Path to Prestigious Indian Institutions

International students wishing to study in India should begin by registering on the SII portal, where they can browse courses offered by over 600 partner institutions. These institutions offer a wide array of more than 8,000 programs, ranging from undergraduate and postgraduate degrees to doctoral and certification courses.

Study areas span engineering, technology, management, arts, humanities, and specialized fields like paramedical sciences, Buddhist studies, and yoga. Once students are accepted into a program, they will receive an admission letter, which they can use to apply for an e-student visa. This visa is valid for up to five years, with the option for extensions to ensure continuity in their studies.
