Indian American Engineer Jayshree Seth Promotes Empowering Book at SWE Annual Meeting

At the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) annual meeting in Chicago, Jayshree Seth, a corporate scientist and chief science advocate at 3M, shared valuable insights from her recent book, The Heart of Science: Engineering Blueprint.

Published by SWE, this book employs an interactive format, featuring infographics and a workbook titled “Draft Blueprints” in each chapter, which encourages readers to apply Seth’s teachings to their own journeys.

Seth aims to empower her audience through self-reflection and inspired action. She explains, “I didn’t start my career knowing how to think in ways that empowered me,” adding that many of the exercises challenge readers to explore roles and scenarios they have only imagined.

The main themes of Engineering Blueprint focus on addressing resistance to diversity initiatives, fostering a leadership mindset centered on sustainability, and embracing an inclusive approach to mentorship. The book highlights the significance of practical knowledge in driving meaningful change in STEM fields, a sentiment echoed by SWE CEO Karen Hortin, who described it as “the perfect capstone course to her trilogy of invaluable teachings.”

Seth's impact on STEM extends beyond authorship; she holds 80 patents and is a well-known advocate for diversity and inclusion within these fields. Her work was also featured in the 3M docuseries Not the Science Type, which debuted at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival.

The sales from her book will contribute to the Jayshree Seth Scholarship for Women of Color in STEM, a fund established in 2021 that has already distributed $29,000 to support underrepresented minorities.

Founded in 1950, SWE is a nonprofit organization committed to advancing women in engineering and technology by providing networking opportunities, professional development, and resources to help women engineers reach their full potential.
