Neeral Shah, NRI, Receives Virginias 2025 Outstanding Faculty Award for Excellence in Medicine

Virginia, USANeeral Shah, a professor of medicine at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, has been honored with the 2025 Outstanding Faculty Award by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia. He is one of twelve distinguished educators statewide recognized for their exceptional contributions to teaching, research, and service.

This prestigious award, sponsored by Dominion Energy, includes a $7,500 prize and will be presented during a ceremony on March 4, 2025, in Richmond.

Shah, an academic transplant hepatologist, specializes in liver disease treatments and collaborates with biomedical engineers to develop innovative diagnostic tools for bleeding disorders. He serves as the director of UVA's Gastroenterology Fellowship Program and co-chairs the pre-clerkship curriculum, playing an influential role in shaping the education of future medical professionals.

In addition to his work at UVA, Shah is the editor of Access Medicine and The Infographic Guide to Medicine, resources that are integral to medical education in 98% of U.S. medical schools and used across 70 countries worldwide.

Shah earned his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and holds dual bachelor’s degrees in chemical engineering and biomedical engineering, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach to medicine.

The Outstanding Faculty Awards, established in 1987, honor faculty members from Virginia's higher education institutions. This year, 83 nominations were submitted, with awardees selected by a panel of peers and a committee of public and private sector leaders.
