Wellington,New Zealand:In a bid to address its workforce shortage, the New Zealand government has introduced relaxed visa rules, making it easier for foreign workers and students to settle in the country. These changes focus on reducing restrictions related to work experience, salaries, and visa duration.
This update comes as a boon for Indians aspiring to establish themselves in New Zealand. The government has eased requirements for various visas, streamlining processes related to work experience and pay structures. Key reforms include reducing the required work experience for foreign workers from three years to two, simplifying hiring procedures for employers.
Additionally, New Zealand has introduced new visa categories to attract more seasonal workers. Experienced seasonal employees can now benefit from a multi-entry visa, allowing multiple trips over three years, while low-skilled seasonal workers can avail a seven-month single-entry visa.
The government has also adjusted salary rules for foreign workers. Accredited employers and specific-purpose work visa holders can now have their salaries set based on market conditions. However, a minimum salary threshold remains in place for those seeking to bring their children. Furthermore, the requirement to advertise jobs for 21 days before hiring foreign workers has been revised. Employers now need to demonstrate genuine efforts to prioritize local candidates by advertising and conducting interviews, without the previous time constraint.
Another significant change involves reducing the mandate for companies to allocate 35% of roles to locals; this quota has been lowered to 15%, opening more opportunities for foreign employees. Students transitioning to work visas will also gain interim employment rights starting in April, and post-study work visa holders can remain in the country for up to three years to seek jobs.
