Diaspora Youth: Catalysts of Indias Progress, Minister Declares at Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2025

Addressing the theme, “Beyond Borders: Diaspora Youth Leadership in a Globalized World,” during the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) 2025 on January 8, Indian Minister of Labour and Employment and Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, described the youth and diaspora as pivotal forces driving India's transformation into a developed nation.

A Vision for 2047

Mandaviya elaborated on the Prime Minister’s vision for India to achieve developed nation status by 2047, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of its independence. He underscored the advantage of India’s youthful demographic, stating, “Thirteen out of every 20 Indians are under the age of 35. This unparalleled potential must be harnessed for innovation, leadership, and the building of our nation.”

The Minister highlighted how the global exposure of the Indian diaspora could significantly contribute to India’s leadership on the world stage. Drawing historical parallels, he cited Mahatma Gandhi’s return from Africa in 1915, which fueled the Indian independence movement, as an example of how international experiences can shape the nation’s destiny.

“Gandhi’s lessons from abroad powered our freedom struggle. Today, the diaspora has a similar opportunity to drive India’s development,” he remarked.

Empowering the Next Generation

Mandaviya praised initiatives like the Tweet for Developed India competition, which invited ideas from over 3 million Indian youth about shaping the country’s future. Outstanding participants from this initiative will have the opportunity to meet the Prime Minister at the upcoming National Youth Festival.

He also acknowledged the significant contributions of India’s youth during the pandemic, especially in ensuring the successful rollout of vaccines. “Our young scientists and healthcare professionals played a key role in delivering 220 million vaccine doses, even in the most remote areas,” he said.

Strengthening Connections with the Diaspora

The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, an annual event, celebrates the achievements of the global Indian diaspora while fostering collaboration to propel India’s progress. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to officially inaugurate the event on January 9.
